08/20/2003 6:30p PT Scott Watkins - Reviewer What does Rivers Cuomo listen to when he’s not writing songs for Weezer? Well, he listens to AM Radio, of course. I know what you’re thinking. AM Radio is for old people and elevators. True, but this isn’t your grandma’s AM Radio. AM Radio is an emotionally driven quintet, who happens to be managed by the Weezer front-man. Their debut album, Radioactive on Elektra Records, is a pop gem consisting of 13 songs of emotionally charged lyrics and catchy hooks. Two of my favorites feature the best of AM Radio. "Taken For A Ride", sure to be deemed ear-delicious by anyone listening to FM radio, documents the darker side of show business. The opening drum beat and chorus sound a bit like Hot Hot Heatand I think that’s a good thing. Although the sound is reminiscent of the previously mentioned band, AM Radio has its own unique style that comes through with clarity. "I Just Wanna Be Loved", showcases the singing talents of Kevin Ridel with a Chris Isaak type of crooning, which is sure to melt the panties off of teenage girls around the world. Bottom line: If it’s good enough for Rivers, it should be good enough for you. Although they are lucky enough to be associated with the likes of a Rivers Cuomo, AM Radio proves that they're deserving of any recognition that comes their way.
