I am of a conflicted mind when listening to the strangely titled From the Top of My Tree by The Bodies Obtained. However, they prefer you read it in this way: The Bodies Obtained From the Top of My Tree, making it sound like a conceptual piece. What this Detroit band's is hoping to achieve is art-rock stamina based on the styles left behind by The Residents, and even Brian Eno's early solo years. They do manage to pull it off to a degree.
The music of The Bodies Obtained is quite arty. In fact, on the album's third song, “Looking for More” I find myself in mind of a bizarre Disney cartoon. With the song's use of 'tick-tock' percussion, and other assorted cartoon-like sounds as well as the rap-like vocals, it moves beyond the norm expected for a Rock band.
However, in spite of all this strangeness, I find myself drawn to this album's inconsistent stream of music that can sound like David Bowie (“I'm a Stranger”) at a point, and Pink-Floydian with their “The Pig That I Am.” With stranger titled fare like “Let the Worm Seize the Day” and “Skin Stuck to Bone,” not all songs hit the mark. But, mined, the album has some good, interesting pieces. Overall, From the Top of My Tree is best visited by fans of the outer periphery of music.
