Poll: Which The Who Album Is MOST Classic?
I had planned on doing The Moody Blues for this Poll of MOST Classic Album but I have been listening to quite a bit of Quadrophenia lately. Not only is the remaster excellent, the demos from Pete’s vaults are pretty revealing as well. And so, I’ll put the Moody Blues on a temporary hold and ask the simple question, which is The Who’s MOST Classic Album.
The Who has produced a surprising array of classics that will, no doubt make this poll quite difficult. In fact, I’m actually torn between two. Who’s Next, the collection of session tracks intended for Lifehouse, a Who opera that never came to fruition, was simply a stunning classic beginning to end. With songs like “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, “Behind Blue Eyes”, “Going Mobile”, “Baba O’Riley”, and “The Song Is Over” to just name a few of the gems found on this 1971 treasure. Choose it and you’ve made an undisputeable choice.
But then there’s the 1973 brilliance of Quadrophenia, with 2 LPs worth of unforgettable songs. ”Love Reign O’er Me” stands out the best but there are undeniable pleasures throughout the album.
Then, of course, there’s Tommy. Many fans there. While I’m not a heads over heels fan of Tommy like many are (I reserve that for Quadrophenia), I do appreciate the music found on the album. And some may even point tot he definitive representation of the power of The Who with Live At Leeds.
Of course, we’re just scratching The Who surface here. So the question must be asked: Which is The Who’s MOST classic album?
